Lincolnshire is gold for equestrians
Fri 02 Aug 2024
Like everyone in Louth and in Lincolnshire, we are incredibly proud of the achievement of local equestrian, Ros Canter who rode Lordships Graffalo aka Walter into a team gold medal place at the Paris Olympics 2024. Not least because Ros is the granddaughter of Dick Chatterton a former senior partner of Masons.

Ros from Hallington, just outside Louth, grew up on the family farm and said she couldn't quite believe that she'd got to the Olympics. In a recent interview with BBC Radio Lincolnshire, she confirmed how incredibly proud she was to come from our county and acknowledged how amazing it was to be able to perform on her horse in front of all those people.
She thanked Michelle and Archie from Spilsby in Lincolnshire who bought Lordships Graffalo for her and brought him to her yard at Hallington when he was a three-year old. Her achievement is all the greater as there aren’t many top event riders in this area. That might all be about to change now that Ros has put Lincolnshire on the map in front of the international equestrian community.
So, what makes Lincolnshire special for equestrians?
Lincolnshire offers the last undiscovered and unspoiled countryside for horse riding in England. Whether you start your children in Pony Club, age 5, like Ros or want to enjoy a quiet hack along country lanes, you’ll find all kinds of riding easily accessible here, with wide verges and even some hills in the Wolds. Of course, if you choose near the coast many of East Lindsey's beaches are accessible all year round for horses to gallop on the beach.
As a county, we boast huge swathes of agricultural land, farms and woodland and not many people, which means it's still possible to find some affordable equestrian properties on the market. From the coast to rural villages and vast open countryside where you can enjoy an extremely high quality of living with your horses and ponies stabled right outside your back door.

From a simple pony paddock to exceptional equestrian properties with stables and a floodlit manege, Lincolnshire equestrian properties also often come with the opportunity for brilliant live-work spaces, whether you want to train horses, run a riding stable, offer livery or perhaps seek an annexe or outbuilding to convert for holiday accommodation. It's a great place to bring different generations of your family together.
At Masons, we specialise in equestrian property having expanded from land agency into estate agency selling houses to horse riders back in 2005. Our equestrian expert Rosie Chetwynd-Talbot is on hand to help you find your perfect equestrian property and answer any questions you may have if you’d like to enquire about relocating to Lincolnshire in search of your dream equestrian lifestyle.
Within Masons and Partners LLP, we’re fortunate to offer equestrian buyers more support than most estate agents, having an ex professional equestrian in our Masons Rural planning team in Lauren Chamberlin. During her equestrian career she represented Great Britain in the same team as Ros at the European Championship and continues to compete at a high level when time allows.
Lauren takes care of Planning & Development for clients, so we can often advise equestrian buyers pre-sale on what might be possible. She can advise on any additional planning permission if you need to change class of use from agricultural us to equestrian, for example, or to put up additionally stabling or build your own manege.
These days, Lauren enjoys riding around the farm where she lives with her husband at Sixhills explaining “We are so lucky to have some great rides around, including the UK Chasers at Hallington - which is sure to be very popular now following Ros’ success - as well as beautiful rides around Tetford.”

"If I were searching today, it would be all about facilities and location. Lincolnshire has a wealth of professional support and training facilities, including Hallington UK Chasers, Shansho at Fillingham, Winters Equestrian Cross Country Training and Willow Banks Arena Hire near Market Rasen."
“Yes, it’s great for equestrians to have everything in one space, but I could live without an arena providing there was good hacking. I would prefer a barn over outside stables, but everyone is different, luckily there is a great choice of equestrain properties available in Lincolnshire.”
Price is a big consideration. As Rosie mentioned when interviewed for an article in Horse & Hound last year, talking about Ros Canter's success from her Lincolnshire home, it is becoming clear that equestrians are being ‘Lured to Lincolnshire’, beacuse you can simply get more for your money here. Like the headline said we have Cotswolds allure at a fraction of the price!
“The biggest pull (for buyers) will be the value. We are a lot lower than elsewhere,” Rosie went on to explain.
“We’re not built-up and our roads are much quieter. We have wide verges and safe country lanes, as well as a really good bridleway network, so for happy hacking it’s amazing.”
