Friday 14th June saw the end of an era, and beginning of new ones, when the famous Walmer Herd of Pedigree Lincoln Red Cattle was dispersed at Louth, Lincolnshire’s only livestock market.

As you’d expect on such a momentous day there wasn’t a spare seat in the house and buyers travelled from all over the country as well as joining us via the online bidding platform Marteye.

The Walmer Pedigree Herd of Lincoln Red Cattle was founded by Hedley Needler at Walmer House Farm, North Killingholme and Vicarage Farm, South Killingholme. Based on his one third share of the Acthorpe Herd, on dissolving of the family partnership with his elder borther Milson and father Jim, at Boundary Farm, Great Limber, all three of these farms being on the Brocklesby Estate.

With over 60 years of history and 76 supreme championships behind it, as well as the Walmer Herd being members of the Biobest Cattle High Health Scheme and from a TB4 area, the sale attracted considerable interest from livestock farmers in search of some of the best genetics in the Lincoln Red breed.

As reported in the Farmers Guardian on Friday 21st June, top call of the day was at £5500gns for Walmer Bartholomew, a Wretton Wrangler son out of a Walmer Rose cow. He sold to G & B Dobson Ltd, South Elkington.

“We were honoured to have been instructed by the Needler family to handle such a significant dispersal sale in the breed’s history and fitting that Lincoln Reds should be sold in their native county” explained auctioneer Edward Middleton.

Cows and calves topped at £4200gns for Lot 19, Walmer Sally W1251 with her heifer calf at foot, a 2017 born cow sired by Market Stainton Norman, sold to Sharon and Phil Sellers, Thorpe Tilney. Not far behind at £3100gns was Lot 28, Walmer Rose Y1320, sired by Brakenhurst Ranger with twin heifer calves at foot sired by Holegate Zeal, selling to Greenheath Farming Co, Lakenheath. Lot 31, Walmer Sally Z1377 sold for £2800gns to AW Lewis & Son, Louth.

Yearling heifers were very sought after topping at £2500gns for lot 47 Walmer Lass C512, a Beverly Zion daughter, she sold to Greenhealth Farming Co, Lakenheath. Next call was for lot 43, Walmer Sally B495, a Houghton Warden daughter, she sold for £2200gns to RH & M Borrill, Immingham.
