As part of the emerging ‘Great Grid Upgrade’, National Grid have announced proposals for two new electricity infrastructure projects in Lincolnshire and West Norfolk. The aim of the schemes is to bring green energy generated in Scotland to the Midlands and the South of England, helping progress towards the UK’s wider net zero targets. National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is jointly developing Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) with SSEN Transmission (SSEN) and Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) with SP Energy Networks (SPEN).

What does this new infrastructure scheme mean for Lincolnshire landowners?

Essentially, they are proposing two new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) electricity links from Aberdeenshire (EGL3) and Fife (EGL4) via marine cables under the North Sea with landfall either at Theddlethorpe or Anderby Creek. Having made landfall, both underground cables will then run south, through Lincolnshire and down into West Norfolk with associated above ground infrastructure along the route.

Affected parties may have already received paperwork from Ardent (NGET’s agents) informing you of the scheme and the proposed route. The interactive map here shows the route in more detail. As seen previously, the initial search corridor is vast in places, and they are looking to undertake non-intrusive surveys in the coming months to help narrow down their preferred route. They are inviting local communities and landowners to comment on these proposals in an initial 8-week consultation period which runs until 17th June. NGET and Ardent are holding consultation events over the coming months. We advise you to attend if possible.
